I found this book bleak yet gripping, so it’s a good read.-E
I like how it says based on a true story but it also gives the book a different vibe. I chose it because of its destination and how you want to know why they were left. (3/5)-H
I think that this book is a beautiful tale of survival and self-discovery, set on a Scottish Island. Quill and his friends wait for rescue but they never come. It’s also a mysterious tale. (4/5)-Z
Where the World Ends by Geraldine McCaughrean is a historical adventure book. It is based on a true story which took place in 1727 in St. Kilda, which is a group of islands situated near to the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Every year a group of friends visit a remote sea stac and go fowling to collect food, feathers and oil. But this year the boat doesn’t arrive to take them back home and they are left stranded. The only thing to explain this is supposedly the end of the world. The book follows their bid for survival and the hardships they face such as no food and wintery stormy conditions. My favourite character is Quilliam (he prefers to be called Quill) who I would say is the main character as the book focuses on him most of the time. He is a courageous and confident boy that loves being active. The story kept me guessing which just meant I didn’t want to put the book down! Although overall an exciting read, there were also parts that were quite sad and depressing. Overall I would say this is for younger readers (12+) and is for people who like adventure/thrillers. I really enjoyed this book and would rate it 9/10.
Thrilling at the end. It’s a survival/journey book. 5 stars.-J
This book was compelling, dangerous and kept me up for hours reading. It is about a group of boys who head to an island to hunt for birds. But, when no one comes to take them home, they must depend on themselves to survive the winter. I love how this book was based on real life events and showed just how strong and courageous people can be, as well as selfish and cruel. Each character had a specific personality that added to the challenges of danger and survival. I would recommend this book to people who will happily stay up for hours reading a book and who love to read about survival.-S
